Participation
Your winery is invited to
participate in several ways. First, this is a rare opportunity
to showcase your premier wines to the world's leading
wine writers. The Press Tasting is limited to 100 journalists who will pour and taste
your wines at their leisure. The writers use this time
to study and take notes, using the information for future
articles and reference material. We ask that you send
three bottles of each wine you'd like to showcase. There
is no entry fee, only the cost of shipping the wines
to The Wine Appreciation Guild warehouse.
Again this year, the journalists at the Press tasting
will vote for wines in four categories: Best Discovery,
Best New Winery, Best Package and Best of Show. The results
will be announced at the Evening Award Banquet.
The goal of this event is to show support for wine writers,
whose words, as WLA winner Dan Berger put it, often "outlast
the wines for which they were written". Your participation
in the evening banquet is highly encouraged. Tickets for
the black tie gala are $195 per person, which includes
a Grand Tasting of more than a thousand American wines.
You will be treated to an hors d’oeuvre buffet
and multi-course dinner prepared by the chefs of the California
Culinary Academy. You will also witness this year’s Wine
Literary Award winner receive his or her honor. This year’s
recipient is not yet determined. The award committee will
announce its decision in February. Past winners include
Hugh Johnson, Jancis Robinson, Dan Berger, Robert Parker,
Jr., Gerald Asher, James Halliday, Michael Broadbent, Robert Lawrence Balzer and Andrea (Immer) Robinson.
Wineries may also sponsor a wine writer at the Evening Banquet. This was immensely successful last year, giving a number of participating wineries and writers the opportunity to become acquainted. There are several levels of sponsorship, and you are welcome to add your own touch to the package, (i.e. inviting the writer to your facilities for a tour in the days following the event). Several wine writers do not have the budget to make the trip for the event. The more writers we can bring to taste our wines, the more written results for the entire industry.
Please examine the enclosed material and let us know
your level of involvement. Space is limited, and we need
your RSVP by April 21st.
